A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

book by Bert Shevelove & Kurt Gelbart, Music & Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim

Lars Jensen. MD David Hardie, Choreographer Rachel Leonhardt.

Inspired by the farces of the Roman playwright Plautus, who lived from 251-183 BC  this Tony Award winning musical tells the story of the slave Pseudolos and his attempts to gain his freedom by helping his young master win 'the girl next door'.

Pure farce the story featurs puns, mistaken identity much coming in and out of doors and satirical comments on social class.. The title derives from the old saying often used in vaudeville in times past that 'a funny thing happened on the way to the theatre'

Originally produced on Broadway in 1962 starring Zero Mostel  where it ran for 964 performances it has since been revived  many times . Frankie Howerd & Kenneth Connor starred in the first London production.

The film version was made in 1966, again starring Zero Mostel as Pseudolus.

Comedy Tonight is probably the best known song from the show.

Featuring Ross Bryant as Pseudolus, with Phil Mackenzie, Diana Ryman, Morgan Phillips, Kimberley Harris, Emmet Nichols, Harry Lenthall, Craig Menner, Judith Clark, Niquelle May. Barbara Lovell, Tarryn Bullock, Vicki Kirkman, Stuart Riches, Jeff Hansen, Warren McGrath.

AND- as a bonus we have a wonderful nine piece orchestra, seductively called 'Creatures of the Night' conducted by David Hardie.

Krispin Maesalu, Catherine Motteram,Kimberley Bell,Talitha Broughton,Adam Bond,Belinda Flindell, Suresh Manievannan,Lyn Brown, Ingrid Purich

'Forum" opens next Friday.
Rehearsals are progressing, and it's all starting to come together.
I hope the audience have as much fun as the cast are having.
I, though, will be leaving my dignity in the green room, as I have no use for it during this show Smiling

Just to verify last nights comments. Last night's Sitzprope went very well.

It's sounding great and we are having a lot of fun putting it together.

Oh yes- and did we mention the dancing girls and the men in loin-cloths before the champagne ?

This is one musical that has not been seen in Perth for a very long time so come and re-aquaint yourselves with it or see it for the very first time.

Stunning surprises, Cunning disguises, Pantaloons and tunics, Courtesans and eunuchs! Funerals and chases! Baritones and basses! Philandrers! Cupidity! Timidity!Mistakes! Fakes! Rhymes! Mimes! Tumblers! Grumblers! Fumblers! Bumblers!

We're halfway through the run, and after a quietish opening weekend, ticket sales have taken off, with Thursday 15th and Friday 16th sold out. As of last night there were 4 seats available for tonight, Saturday 17th, but if you haven't booked for tonight by now, you're not going to get in.
There were 20 seats left for the matinée on Sunday 18th, and selling fast.
Next weeks final 3 nights still have plenty of room, but if this week is anything to go by, you'll need to book ASAP.
If you turn up on the night hoping for a seat, you may be disappointed.

Bookings on 93304565
or
melville.theatre.company@gmail.com

Last minute bookings (within 12 hours of curtain) should be directed to the phone number.

We're having a ball. Come join us.
