In Menzies Theatre this year you will find a play inspired by the 1986 film River’s Edge. Opening March 5 and directed by student theatre’s artistic director Bob Pavlich, be prepared to look at your dark side in By the River.
‘This play has been inspired by a 1986 film,
itself based on the true story of the murder of a young woman and its aftermath.
A high school student kills his girlfriend at the river's edge,
and shows her body off to his friends.
Their reactions vary- but few seem disturbed by the girls’ death.
This free adaptation combines this story with newer material
to explore the notion of moral disengagement
and how when faced with incidents of evil
we often sit back and passively observe rather than act to right the wrong.’
