Honk! The Musical Comedy of the Ugly Duckling

Music by George Stiles, Book and Lyrics by Anthony Drewe

Cat Baxter

Honk if you've ever been an ugly duckling!
If that sentiment was made into a bumper sticker, chances are Perth would be a pretty noisy place.
Though most people can relate to Hans Christian Andersen's classic tale of "The Ugly Duckling," Ugly struggles to find his inner beauty within a gaggle of mostly "fowl" characters, like barnyard geese, ducks, crows, peacocks - even a bluejay - as they scorn the plain and gangly youngster.
"Honk!" spans the generations, delivering the message to 5 million people in more than 3000 productions around the world that being different is OK.
This show is not just for the young, but also for the young at heart, like all good productions, this show has hilarious double meanings and hidden innuendo, that will have everyone in stitches and laughing in the aisles.

I LOL’ED all the way through this show, it was like nothing, I have ever seen.

I must admit I went to see this show because I was dragged along by a theatre friend who got the tickets from BOCS. She was saying it will be great, it’s a musical and you love musicals, so off we went to see this show we knew nothing about!!

Well when we entered the theatre and were presented with such a majestic looking stage, “as if a children’s story book had come to life right there on the stage”, the colors and stylized look captured my attention immediately. Just thought I would mention that as it did make me go oh “I like what I see”.

I think if you are looking for something to do over the next week, this show is a definite winner and something the whole family will enjoy, for me the songs were catchy and stuck in your head, the performers were hilarious and caught your attention. Specifically I would like to say how the young actor who played Ugly, was amazing. Now either he has really captured the characterization of the part or was typecast . I don’t know. But he was amazing! I think his name was Scott??, either way he was amazing and was the biggest stand out in the show.

Talking of standing out, my other two favorites where the young boy who played the frog “hilarious x 10” he is one funny little green machine, that had everyone in stitches.. luved it Well done!
And secondly was the cat, he has such a commanding presence on stage, and I found myself sitting there just watching what he did, not the best signer , but what he lacked in tune he made up in character! I think his name was Jason… but well done anyway.

And of course the rest of the cast and crew, it was a great show and I’m glad I got the chance to come and see it. Keep up the good work!!
