Monash Academy Orchestra
Mark Shiell conductor
Ian Munro piano
Beethoven
Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat major Op. 73 Emperor
Dvorak
Symphony No. 9 in E minor From the New World
For our first concert in 2010 we have chosen two of the most popular works in the classical music repertoire. In fact, when ABC FM conducted their Top 100 polls, these two works were each number one respectively in the piano concerto and symphony lists.
Melbourne’s Ian Munro has emerged over recent years as one of Australia’s most distinguished and awarded musicians, with a career that has taken him to thirty countries in Europe, Asia, North America and Australasia. His award in 2003 of Premier Grand Prix at the Queen Elisabeth International Competition for composers (Belgium) is a unique achievement for an Australian and follows on from multiple prizes in international piano competitions in Spain (Maria Canals), Italy (Busoni), Portugal (Vianna da Motta) and the UK, where his second prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition in 1987 established his international profile.

Monash Academy Orchestra
Jeffrey Crellin conductor
Katherine Taylor violin
Sharon Draper cello
Brahms
Double Concerto for violin and cello in A minor Op 102
Beethoven
Symphony No 3 in E flat Op 55 Eroica
Beethoven’s third symphony is considered a milestone in the history of the classical symphony. The work covers more emotional ground than earlier works and is often cited as the beginning of the Romantic period in music. The first movement alone is almost as long as a typical Mozart or Haydn symphony.
Brahms superb Double Concerto is performed by two outstanding young members of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Katherine Taylor and Sharon Draper, whose association with the Monash Academy Orchestra as mentors and tutors has been an enriching experience for all.
Heroic concert ticket holders are invited to join us at Robert Blackwood Hall for complimentary drinks and snacks from 3.15pm until the commencement of the concert.
