'Pass The Butler' by Eric Idle

Eric Idle

Peter Nettleton

It is the mid 1980s in England. Sir Robert Charles, Minister for Defence and Deputy Leader of the Conservative Party lies comatose after suffering a severe heart-attack during a vigorous debate on the floor of the House. His nearest and dearest are now faced with the agonising decision to switch off the life support systems, with all its legal, moral, political and possibly constitutional ramifications. Throw some papparazzi - and a spanner into the works - and you have the makings of a fast-paced, satirical comedy of bad manners.

I know there is a federal election campaign on at the moment but it is purely co-incidental that 'Pass The Butler' contains no less than TWO (2) politicians!

Moreover, Eric Idle's satirical style may APPEAR to be of the scatter-gun variety, however a close reading reveals a definite attack on catholic conservatism (or is that conservative catholicism?)

Suffice it to say that neither Tony Abbott nor Cardinal Pell has yet been to see the play, nor have they used it in campaign ads.

3 nights to go. Don't miss it!!

I think I know which would be a more fun night out. All the best for your closing week. I shall unfortunately miss the show as our dates clash for your entire run.

Thanks for that, Jeff - and for the loan of your predecessor Mr Riches who is covering himself in glory in the pivotal role of 'Harris'.

We are expecting a good crowd for our final night, which happens to co-incide with election night (well, we picked our date first) - and the bar will be open before, during and after the show.

I must also acknowledge and thank our other neighbours, Harbour Theatre, for the loan of numerous props from their vast store.
