Zulya and The Children of The Underground

ARIA Award-winning World Music sensation Zulya and the Children of the Underground brings its mouth-watering mix of Russian, Tatar and English songs to Don Russell Performing Arts Centre for one show only on Thursday 22 April at 8pm.

The group’s 2007 ARIA for Best World Music Album, 3 Nights, also spent four months in the Top 10 of the European World Music charts. The only other Australian album to have come close to these dizzying heights was the group’s previous album, The Waltz of Emptiness.

Band leader Zulya Kamalova immigrated to Australia in the early 1990’s and ever since has been wowing audiences with her dramatic and passionate take on traditional Tatar music, Russian jazz and folk.

Her irresistible voice and music is awash with cultural texture, providing a window into a fascinating civilisation with a rich and varied history.

The instrumental abilities of her accompanying band members, their arrangements and sublime melodies make this show a unique musical experience.

Raised in Tatarstan in central Russia, Zulya has been recording music since 1997. She has received various awards aside from her ARIA, including winner of Album and Artist of the Year at the Australian World Music Awards.

Zulya began performing with The Children of the Underground band in 2003. The group members include Andrew Tanner on double bass and Jew’s harp; Lucas Michailidis on guitar, Justin Marshall on drums and percussion along with jazz trumpeter Eamon McNelis.

Admission is $30.70 standard, $26.70 concession, $22.60 for students and groups of 10 or more people.
