Candide

Music by Leonard Bernstein; Book adapted from Voltaire by Hugh Wheeler; Lyrics by Richard Wilbur

Kevin Langoulant

Candide is a fiercely funny comic operetta by Leonard Bernstein, based on the novella of the same name by Voltaire.

Candide is most famous for its colourful and varied score, and is considered by many the wittiest – indeed, funniest – operetta (whose plot encompasses rape, murder, executions, religious persecution and bodily mutilation) ever penned.

Part sophisticated operetta, part wacky screwball comedy with shades of Monty Python, this funny, irreverent satire is the perfect musical expression of Voltaire’s tongue-in-cheek send-up of optimistic philosophies.

This is a brief note to advise that we enjoyed our visit to Playlovers on Sun 10th night for the performance of Candide an opportunity made possible by Capital Community Radio.

We do enjoy amateur theatre but usually attend closer to home and to be honest Candide was probably not a play that we would go to of our own choosing. But it was very enjoyable to watch such talented amateurs perform in such a challenging play with so much accomplishment. All in the very large cast, actor/singers and musicians performed a lengthy and wordy operetta with aplomb with some of the voices of truly operatic quality. The simple but effective set was well used to present travels through many countries and over several oceans. Now that we know exactly your location we will take greater notice of forthcoming productions and hopefully we can visit again.

After getting a divorce from C.K. Dexter Haven, Tracy Lord prepares to marry again… however, in the days before her wedding, Haven and a reporter, posing as her brother’s friend, show up at her doorstep. From there, Tracy is forced to choose among her past love, her present love and her new love. Amidst the situation comedy, and fast-paced dialogue, Barry explores several contemporary social issues, such as society’s perception of class differences in America and attitudes towards adultery and divorce in the 1930’s.
