"The Kid"

Michael Gow

Directed by Brad Tudor , Assistant Director Kim Angus

With Jesse Angus, Ashlea Tunbridge, Jamie Tundbridge, Scott Blachford, Ellie Whiteaker, Peter shaw, and Natalie Burbage.

You won't ever know. You'll be caught out like everyone else. You'll go up in smoke

Twenty-five years ago, Michael Gow launched his career with an extraordinary play that took Australian Theatre by storm. Foreshadowing Away, it too chartered a family's epic summer journey. but this is a very different family - and a very different destination.

In blazing heat, a stolen mini hurtles towards Sydney. Inside, three teenagers from the country -- Snake, Aspro and Dean -- plan a future that will begin when they collect Aspro's accident compo from the Department. Joined by Donald, an opera fanatic desperate for a change of scene, they travel to the city to take up residence in 'the largest block of flats in the Southern Hemispher'.

As bush fires rage on the edge of the city, they meet Desiree, a young girl from downstairs with apocayptic predictions.

Sparks fly. Tensions esculate. Twilight approaches.

It also says Sulphur Road, Kwinana...

So I'm guessing Kwinana.

They haven't flagged the Location in the Search Words though and I have a hunch that's what you meant.

Walter,

3 posts ago you advertised the show dates and venue, so you already know where it is. You must be involved with the show in some capacity to have this information at hand and for you to want to advertise it??
What is the purpose of your post? Is this an advertising ploy?? You have given the details and then asked for them!!

Just to clear the air and as Director of THE KID, I can safely say that the previous posts, other than the one advertising the show, are not a ploy.

A lady did contact me today, whom I assume is the same one commenting about Natalie and Peter, after reading about the show in the local paper.

However, I am not complaining - Its is still good advertising Laughing out loud

The Kid - Review

For some reason I can't post this on the review page?

I went to see The Kid last weekend with my Husband, we read about the play in our local paper. This is one of our first pro-am productions we have seen in WA since moving to Mandurah from the North Coast of Sydney. We were delighted to find out that this play was set in the North Coast and Sydney.

We had seen the professional production produced by the Griffin Theatre production of the Kid in 2008. But WOW!!! This production was just as good if not better!

Brad Tudor really has created a fantastic production that deserves a much bigger audience. The set design also designed by Tudor, is simple but effective. It truly feels like the backstreets of Sydney. I don’t want to give too much away about the set, as it was a real treat walking into the theatre to take our seats and being faced with a breathtaking preset.

The Kid is a character study of Dean played by Jesse Angus, a bisexual teenager who takes advantage of everyone, often for sexual pleasure, as events in his life spiral apocalyptically out of control. Dean feels the weight of many responsibilities as he drives down to Sydney with his sister Snake (Jamie Tunbridge) to seek financial compensation for their brain-injured brother Aspro (Ashlea Tunbridge). This is Michael Gow’s first play.

Early on in the play we encounter Peter Shaw playing a bookshop owner who writes and sells obscure books about convict mythology and local history. The character is clearly a comment on the national navel gazing of the period, and you get the feeling we Aussies have grown up a little since then. Likewise, the homosexual advances by Dean on Donald played by Scott Blachford do not shock, as they would have in the late seventies/early eighties.

The play picks up momentum as the siblings arrive in Sydney and sweet talk a kindly woman (Natalie Burbage) into giving them an apartment. The flats also house the play’s most disturbing character, Desiree (Ellie Whiteaker), a young woman who’s found her calling delivering messages of Armageddon.

The productions’ strongest feature is the tension that builds to disturbing intensity within the scenes. Peter Shaw gives a chilling performance as Desiree’s father who stands silently in a sweat soaked singlet and Jeans while Dean tries to untie Desiree from the chair he has bound her to.

Ultimately Dean fails to meet the challenges presented to him. He could have rescued Desiree but just wanted her for sex. By the end of the play, he slouches in his chair and pops pills.

The staging is superb. Blazing lights depict Sydney’s apartments as surreal places of danger. The soundtrack is also suitably disturbed and a few sounds of Australiana help set the scene.

Although the script feels very disjointed, this play is worth a look for the disturbing tension it creates. Be warned: this is definitely not the play to restore your faith in humanity.

Stand out performances go to Peter Shaw, Natalie Burbage, Ellie Whiteaker and Jesse Angus. Special mention goes to Scott Blachford, Jamie Tunbridge and the youngest of the cast Ashlea Tunbridge.

If you haven’t booked tickets do so now as this is one play I am glad I did not miss!!!

Show runs I believe until Saturday. Thursday, Friday and Saturday shows at 8pm.

The Kid - Review

There’s nothing more impressive than an opening statement! Something that peeks the interest of our audience from the start. Then captures their imagination and gets the creative synapses firing.

I am happy to say that the opening impact an atmosphere created by the set and lighting of “The Kid” is one of the best I have seen, the moment you enter the space you are presented with the reality of Michael Gow’s world which helps set the tone and feeling of the play.

Once the production begins you are taking on a journey of discovery, through the use of dramatic moving tableaus, surreal lighting and emotion invoking music, this is a show that does not disappoint.

With a performance from Peter Shaw a stand out in my mind as the eccentric bookshop owner, closely followed by Natalie Burbage as the strangely loveable café lady.

Jesse Angus brings a delightfully cheeky attitude to the role of the title character Dean “aka The Kid” but still maintains a control over the darker side of the character with a perfect balance.

Scott Blachford, Jamie Tunbride, Ashlea Tunbridge and Ellie Whitaker all lend a fantastic ensemble performance to the production that makes this a great show to watch.

I will say most shows I see, I find myself easily distracted and focusing on everything but the show, but for The Kid I couldn’t stop watching. Well done to the director Brad Tudor for a fantastic translation of script to stage and all the cast and crew who helped bring this production to life.

The Kid

After reviewing KTW's 'The Kid' I am pleased to say how much young talent there is in the amateur theatre circuit. From the moment I walked into the theatre I was encapsulated by the creative, yet simplistic set of which the play was based around. The music reflected the plays dark themes and, with the use of some well-known Australian hits, was able to assist in carrying through Gow's script.

As the play began I was drawn to the character, Donald, played by young teenager Scott Blachford. Blachford's performance was both believable and his stage presence was exceptional. Some of his highlights consisted of the discussion of his recent sexual assault made by his male english teacher and the breakdown of the friendship or "brotherhood" with Dean (played by Jesse Angus). I have had the privilege of seeing this young man in two of Koorliny Arts Centre's productions, as well as this performance. It has been clearly displayed that he has a vast capability to portray a wide variety of roles - both strong and creative. He will go a very long way if he keeps up this effort!

The second young actor that stood out in my mind was Ashlea Tunbridge, whom played the younger brother, Aspro. This character required a very strong performer to portray it as he became ill as the play progressed. It came across quite unambiguously that this young man understood his character with both passion and intelligence. Moving from the light-heartedness displayed in act one into act two, where his character was physically seen to be deteriorating, it was clear Ashlea’s strong acting ability saw some tears rolling out of some of the audiences eyes. Again, I have had the pleasure of viewing a number of productions of which Ashlea has been involved in, both comedic and loveable roles. The Kid, however, showcased Ashlea’s vast capability, like Scott’s, to portray something different and especially something as ‘in-you-face’ as this play. Well done!

They say good things come in small packages! Jamie Tunbridge was another stand out youth in The Kid. I do believe this is one of her first major roles in a community theatre show and she displayed it with conviction. Jamie, unlike most first time performers, was able to speak every line with meaning. The delivery of her ‘mother-like’ character to her brother, Aspro, was dominating, humorous and loving all at the same time; something that was vital in this role and she displayed it with confidence. I do hope this young lady continues to perform as it would be very interesting to see her grow and tackle a variety of characters, similar to Scott and her brother Ashlea. Keep striving Jamie. You were brilliant!

I would like to also applaud the young lady whom played the character Desree’, Ellie Whiteaker. She displayed a promising performance that saw her strange character, which involved religion, a father whom would beat her and a sense of being lost. She successfully portrayed these traits through her effective characterization. Excellent work!

It was amazing to see such a talented cast that could portray each of their characters so well. Not mentioned above, Jesse Angus, Natalie Burbage and Peter Shaw all showed fantastic ability to portray each of their characters. Jesse, who played Dean, had no one to love. No mother, or father or even a sister and brother really. He latched onto whoever he could that would show him respect and love, not that it really worked in the duration of the play though. Additionally, Natalie and Peter played a variety of characters, which were all very different to one another showing how experienced their performing abilities were! Well done and look forward to seeing you both in your next production.

Finally, Brad Tudor’s set design and direction was very precise, as usual. His creative mind-set to capture the era (except for the car’s number plate… it should have been yellow!) was displayed very clearly. His scene changes were kept minimal which did not disturb from the story and themes being discussed. He was able to put Michael Gow’s writing into a visual, with creative flair and desire of which the audience enjoyed very much. I do believe that this play deserved to have more tickets sold, as the quality of the play was exceptionally high. I did see some publicity in the local newspaper, however maybe it might have been an idea to think of a different way to advertise. Maybe offer a free viewing so that word-of-mouth will be your best friend?

Overall, KTW’s 'The Kid' is a clear example of how much talent there really is in the Peel region. I look forward to seeing some of the above performers in their next show. Well done!
