Urinetown - The Muiscal

What on earth is a musical doing with a title like Urinetown? This is exactly the question its composers are mischievously wanting you to ask. For Urinetown is a brilliantly conceived musical comedy that sets out to play with all your preconceptions about musical theatre, and turn them upside down. From go to whoa, it is a hugely entertaining piece that embraces all the well known styles of classic musicals, and presents them in a divertingly satiric way, while never forsaking its integrity as an absorbing example of the musical genre in its own right. In addition, it satirizes corporate greed, the legal system, modern bureaucratic nightmares and the shenanigans of local politics with a witty, inventive and thoroughly melodic score. In a kind of reverse pantomime style, its unconventional plotline shatters audience expectations of a predictable "feel good" ending. If ever a musical could be said to be "edgy", Urinetown is it.

Our usual group of enormously talented singers, actors and dancers are going to have a huge amount of fun with this show, and there is plenty of scope for their comic inventiveness, along with many glorious choral moments. In Urinetown, you are more or less experiencing all over again every musical you have ever seen.

Professionally staged by the Melbourne Theatre Company nearly a decade ago, Urinetown says everything there is to say about Broadway musicals. Its original Broadway run was close to 1000 performances from 2001 to 2004, and it was nominated for 8 Drama Desk Awards and 9 Tony Awards, winning three: Best Direction, Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score.

Vibrant, edgy, and exciting, Rent is based on the glorious Puccini opera, La Boheme, a sumptuous, romantic, passionate feast for the senses set in 1840s bohemian Paris. Transported to 1980s New York, our innovative production will hark back to its artistic origins, allowing the eternal bohemian spirit that spans the ages to infect the stage with beauty and light.
