Review: Robin Pascoe in The West Australian Monday December 5th 2011

Eight young people in vivid red tracksuits march onto and off-white square of carpet and sharply draw in breath as they eyeball the audience. The WA Theatre Company’s first production in an Earth, Wind and Fire trilogy announced its intentions with humour mixed with wry self-referential directness.

The Children's Hour is a great play currently showing at the Dolphin Theatre at UWA. It is very well acted, has a good set and a talented mix of young and adult actors. It is a great story which is set in a school in the 1930's. We are taken through a process showing how easily someone can ruin someone's life with malicious talk and gossip.

The Western Australian Youth Theatre Company commissioned director Jeffrey Jay Fowler to cast the most talented performers under 27 he could find and then work with them intensively to create a play based on a single word - EARTH - which had to be the title of the show.

I've been sitting back and thinking about the way people react to reviews - be it reviews of shows we're in or shows we've seen.

People tend to have one of a couple of reactions when it comes to reviews - we either agree vehemently with what has been said or we completely disagree. This can be whether we are a part of the cast/crew etc or just a casual attendee to the performance. I know that I am certainly guilty of it from time to time.

So...did you go last night? I did. It turned out well that I didn't buy my tickets in advance because UWA students had FREE entry! Beat that! (My husband still had to pay $20, though. A $20 dollar night out still beats a $30 night out. Just saying.)

i have seen great stuff at both Barking Gecko and Spare Parts Puppet Theatre. Both venues have really given the punters their money's worth.
Hope Bryce manning gets a good group to Mother Goose at Wembley Theatre this week end.

Potential agent suggestions for Melbourne actor?

Hi everyone,

I have no doubt that posting a request like this here is very unprofessional of me - I'm a hopeful 18-year-old singer and actor thinking of giving professional theatre a go. I've done my fair share of amateur productions, and am planning to now start taking steps towards the professional scene. I've read a number of the great Theatre Australia guides, and so have some idea of the industry and agents. However, I'm based in Melbourne, where there are more theatrical agents than I can count. I've been to the websites of many of the Equity-listed ones, and really can't work out how to tell the reputable from the dis, and the professional from the un. I'm wondering, therefore, if any of you can recommend some good theatrical agents I could use as a starting block, to call while knowing I am getting in touch with a quality agency. If possible, I'd like them to represent performers for musical theatre firstly, and also opera and straight drama.
