Jeff: You can make an old school writing slate really easily. They should measure about 10" by 8". Use a small sheet of hardboard. Put a simple frame on it after you've painted it with blackboard paint. Really it isn't hard.

Is that all there is? Well if that's all there is my friend, then let's keep dancing.

How to "fake" a quill etc.

Head to a haberdashers or craft shop or milliners (maybe Spotlight? They usually have feathers). Select a plume that pleases. Now, hit an old fashioned stationers and you can still track down nibs. If not, mock one up out of very stiff card. Lash to plume firmly, use lot's of thin whipping string stuff so it won't slip at all. If necessary touch up with a little "metal" paint. If you have to use a spray can ensure plume is encased in a plastic bag.

Ink well: I've used a handle-less jam pot on one occasion, also an egg cup (!). They were both glass vessels but the jam one was best because it had a lid with a notch (for the spoon) which supported the quill.

Wish I was there, I'd knock them up for you, ah well. Break things (but not your inkwell)...!
