Looking for Paid/Unpaid casual theatre work.

AlexW | 30/04/2009 - 21:54

I'm new to Melbourne, having just moved from Hobart and I'm searching for Paid or Unpaid (Hopefully Paid) Work around Melbourne.

I'm 18 and have performed in approx 15 Amature/Professional Amature Shows in Hobart and am currently in Melbourne studying Musical Theatre at VCA until August.
As well as onstage experience, I have a VET Certificate III in Live Production, Theatre and Events (Technical Productions) and have Volunteered as an Usher in Hobart.
Due to commitments both with Study and upcoming performances in Hobart however, I have limited time available on Weekends and some evenings.

Could anyone assist me in finding such work? What should I do to make myself more employable? Being new to Melbourne I don't really know where to start!!

Thankyou so much for your help in advance.

Alex. Smiling

Once you've read that, check out the companies page for companies near you (you can search by suburb). If you give me a more specific location within Melbourne I can suggest some places.

I'm in Brunswick, but I'm willing to travel anywhere really, as long as I can get there by train/tram. Thankyou so much Smiling

Can't think of anything in Brunswick off the top of my head, although you might want to check the recent call for actors on this site from one of our members; they listed Brunswick as the location.

You may want to check the Darebin City website, they are heavily involved in arts and even have a local database for artists and groups. There's the Platform Youth Theatre (and there's the Northcote Town Hall or church hall, I forget which, which is a venue) that's in Northcote. I know there's a few things in Preston and Coburg, but not off the top of my head. And of course, you might want to keep your eye out for people who do auditions for shows at La Mama. Other than that, I'm not familiar enough with the area to offer more (I'm over in the Eastern suburbs, and rarely go to the northern ones)

Flynn, the best I can do is advise you to read my previous replies on this thread. There are links and suggestions for companies in the Northcote area; as mentioned above, I'm not often in/around that area, so my familiarity with these suburbs is not wonderful, and the advice already given is the best I can offer.

Hi Alex,

You won't have much luck getting paid work at this time of year unless you want to continue ushering for theatres etc.

If you are interested in working on more amateur musical theatre around Melbourne (unpaid), let me know - private message me. I am always looking for help on shows, mostly in lighting and general bump in tasks, occasionally looking for dome/lighting ops etc.

So if this is what you want to get into, give us a hoi!

Cheers,
Karlae
