Writer needed for Audio Drama

I need a writer to pen an audio Drama (Radio Play). It is a Prison Break/Hostage story. I need an Australian Writer who is a member of APRA.

In order to protect the performing rights of any future productions we do, I need to become a publisher member of APRA myself.

Here is an excerpt from the APRA website.

Joining APRA and AMCOS as a publisher is easy and doesn't cost anything, however membership is subject to the following eligibility criteria:

* The applicant must be a bona fide publishing company or business that is registered and carried on in Australia or New Zealand.

* The applicant must control at least one work which has been commercially released or published in some form.

* The applicant must have a publishing agreement with at least one writer who is a member of APRA or an affiliated performing right society.

In addition to this we require the following information:

* a copy of the publisher’s certificate of incorporation or registration of business name.

* details of the person/s owning and carrying on the publishing company or business.

* the publisher's standard songwriting agreement.

So that is why.

But according to the Copyright Agency Limited, you have automatic copyright in Australia, so why is this move necessary? Read about it here: http://www.copyright.com.au/assets/documents/Ownership%20and%20Infringement.pdf - this applies to both the written word and sound recordings.

I think Kris's point goes beyond simple Copyright. It's about (and correct me if I am wrong) certification, legitimacy and "professionalism" - Professionalism I use in regards to career choice rather than quality as I know there are fantastic script writers out there, whom are not "professional" in the fact that they are not paid ... yet.

Simply put, it is about maintaining an officially recognised industry standard.

Am I right?

I think you might find being a full member (i.e. Not associate or student) of the Australian Writers Guild will also confer the same aspects of professionalism. If that is what is required.
Scripts can be registered there and there is a strict guideline for behaviour and charges.

The main reason is that if my work does get plagiarized or exploited in some way, then I will have a large infrastructure of experienced people who will go to bat for my legal rights as owner of the published work.

I do want to maintain the highest possible professional standard, without becoming one of those bosses that you love to hate.

It does say that the writer can be a member of APRA or an affiliated performing right society. So if anyone is a member of one of those groups that will probably do.

I plan to sell my works worldwide, so the automatic protection offered under Australian copyright does help, it is useless in the rest of the world. APRA is affiliated with groups worldwide and can use those organizations to put pressure on the relevant government department to recognize my rights as the publisher.

You're covered under the Berne Convention when it comes to copyright for the rest of the world.

As with all things it's more about the enforcement capabilities of the organization than my rights as they exist on paper.
