I attended the Tale of Sweeney Todd last night and was blown away!
Having never been to Roleystone Theatre before I made sure I left home a little earlier as I didn't know how long my journey was going to take. Ladies and gentlemen it was well worth the trip and I am organising to attend the Tale once more with a throng of friends.
This was a prime example of fine theatre (irrespective of professional or amatuer).
Normally I like to bring attention to individual performers that were highlights for me. But I seriously can't with this production. All the leads were incredibly strong and equally backed by a supportive and strong chorus.
There were a few audible issues last night mainly brought about by stormy weather, but if you ask me it only added to the atmosphere of a rainy dark night in old London town! It was even a little cool!
The way that the director has handled the logistical nightmare of how to kill and remove the dead characters was extremely effective. I am not going ot give this away, but the simple use of lighting and creative thinking worked a treat! The use of the stage and theatre by the performers also added a multi-layered element to the play and at times became confronting(in a good way!).
Congratulations Roleystone on a tight performance and I look forward to seeing this again on the last week of the run!

No, Playlovers is not doing a musical adaption of Tinto Brass's 1992 soft porn movie of the same name. Playlovers is actually doing a classical opera. This is a fully staged production with orchestra and importantly sung in English.
