Lord of the Flies 1-6 Nov: Are we all animals at heart?
Author: ACTT Actors College (not verified)
Date: 18/10/2010 - 22:21

What makes us civilised. We’re familiar with the pictures and news clips of “child soldiers“ and “street gangs” around the world and their capacity for brutality and violence as societies struggle with questions of personal freedom and the need for intervention to prevent a descent into chaos. This throws up questions: Are we are all animals at heart? Is it nurture, or the rule of law, that civilises us?
Based on William Golding’s classic novel,LORD OF THE FLIES showing at Cleveland St Theatre from 1-6 Nov is a disturbing tale of conflict and savagery as it explores what happens to a group of young people who are forced into a new world where they have to create their own society, structures, norms, standards and laws and how this leads to unexpected and disturbing experiences. Because this story touches nerves on all these sensitive areas and because it raises a primal fear about our own human nature, LORD OF THE FLIES is both topical and confronting.John O'Hare, Director says "My belief about the play is... the 'Beast' is something inside ourselves, 'Evil' is inside our own natures and comes from human kind." What do you think?

The Theatre on Chester (Sydney) presents
The Servant of Two Masters

Written by Carlos Goldini. Re-Written by Nick Enright and Ron Blair.

Carla Moore

Goldoni is made grouse in this colourful and riotous comic masterpiece. Truffaldino doesn’t really think through the problems inherent in having two bosses – especially when they’re unaware of each other’s presence and desperate to get back into each other’s pants. Our hero reckons he’s found a way of increasing his coin and food income on his labour. Or, as he puts it: “two masters, two wages, two dinners – too right!”
